Four score in double figures as Bees defeat Crimson Wave

Haunted by slow starts several times already this season, St. Ambrose turned the tables on its opponent Saturday. The Bees rode a fast 9-2 start to a 64-49 win at Calumet. It was the first win of the year for SAU and first-year head coach Zac Exume.

Behind a career-high 21 rebounds from Caitlyn Thole, SAU outrebounded CCSJ 52-38 and forced 20 Wave turnovers, leading to 26 Bee points. St. Ambrose also limited Calumet to a 2-of-11 effort from beyond the arc.

After spotting Calumet (0-9, 0-4 CCAC) a 2-0 lead, Abby Wolter and Kashell Daughty combined for the next nine points to put St. Ambrose in front for good. The Wave got within a single point at 11-10 before baskets by Wolter and Daughty gave the Bees a 15-10 lead after one quarter.

Andie Burch and Kania Starks each scored five second-quarter points as SAU extended its lead to 33-19 at the half. A Burch 3-pointer pushed the advantage to 40-21 midway through the third quarter and St. Ambrose was able to maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Daughty led the Bees with 18 points. Thole scored 15, Wolter netted 13 and Burch came off the bench to add 12 points. Starks finished with five and Elly Holubar dropped in a point in the victory.

Thole grabbed eight boards in each of the first two quarters and finished with 21, the most rebounds by a Bee in a single game since Katie Jensen also pulled down 21 at AIB on Feb. 22, 2014. Eight of her rebounds came on the offensive end. Thole also recorded four assists and seven steals.

Wolter also posted a double-double with 11 boards. Daughty grabbed five while Burch and Payton Calouette each ran down four.

The Bees, now 1-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAC, will host Judson Saturday.
