St. Ambrose stumbles at Holy Cross

A 13-0 Holy Cross run early in the first quarter set the tone as the Fighting Saints defeated St. Ambrose 94-65 Saturday afternoon in Notre Dame, Ind.

Caitlyn Thole scored on a layup on the first possession of the game then Holy Cross (5-4, 2-1 CCAC) went on its run.

Plagued by turnovers, the Bees committed nine of their 10 over the opening 10 minutes, SAU attempted only 10 field goals in the first quarter while HC got up 21 shots in building a 31-13 lead.

St. Ambrose (0-5, 0-3 CCAC) picked up its play in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Six points from Liz Fish and two each from Elly Doe, Kashell Daughty and Thole cut the deficit to 37-25. A Thole layup put the score at 39-27 before Holy Cross closed the half with the final nine points to lead 47-28 at the break.

SAU got no closer than 16 points in the second half.

The Bees' 20 turnovers led to 39 Saint points. Holy Cross turned it over only five times.

Thole and Abby Wolter led St. Ambrose with 16 points apiece. Thole also grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds. Daughty scored 11. Fish came off the bench to net nine. Rylee Pfoutz finished with six points, Elly Holubar had five and Doe added two.

SAU will visit College of the Ozarks Wednesday.
