Season ends in CCAC Tournament quarterfinals

St. Ambrose saw its season come to an end in an 82-42 CCAC Tournament quarterfinal loss at Olivet Nazarene Wednesday night.

A slow start doomed the Bees. Despite an 0-for-3 start from the floor and three quick turnovers, SAU was tied 2-2 on an Abby Wolter layup three minutes into the contest. Those proved to be the only Bee points of the quarter as St. Ambrose would go scoreless over the next seven minutes.

Four straight turnovers followed Wolter's basket as St. Ambrose committed 12 more turnovers in the quarter to finish with 15 in the period. SAU also shot just 1-of-9 from the floor in the frame to fall behind 12-2.

The Bees battled back in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Wolter scored five straight points to cut the gap to 14-7. But the Tiger pressure got to the Bees. Olivet Nazarene (20-8) closed the quarter on a 23-8 run to go up 37-15 at the half.

ONU then quickly scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to squash any SAU comeback hopes.

St. Ambrose actually outshot Olivet Nazarene from the field, shooting at a .327 clip compared to a .323 mark for ONU. But 44 Bee turnovers allowed the Tigers to attempt 41 more field goals than than the Bees. ONU finished 30-of-93 from the floor while SAU was just 17-of-52.

Jaynee Prestegaard led St. Ambrose with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Wolter totaled 14 points and 10 boards.

No other Bee made more than a single field goal in the game. Anna Plumer scored three points while Caroline Cool, Kaitlyn Brunson, Olivia Harter and Allie Govert each netted two. Halle Ciesielczyk connected on a free throw to complete the SAU scoring. Elly Holubar was scoreless in her three minutes off the bench.

ONU will advance to a tournament semifinal game Friday while SAU finishes the year 16-13.
