Strong fourth quarter leads to win over Trolls

Trailing by five points entering the fourth quarter, St. Ambrose put it all together to rally for a 75-68 win at Trinity Christian Saturday afternoon.

Over the final 10 minutes, the Bees shot better than 61 percent from the floor and limited the Trolls to 25 percent shooting.

It took just 90 seconds of the final period for SAU to draw even. A Jaynee Prestegaard layup and a three-point play from Caitlyn Thole evened the score at 57-57. Minutes later, the Bees took the lead for good as Prestegaard knocked down a jumper for a 65-64 lead. After a TCC miss, Abby Wolter converted a three-point play to push the lead to 68-64. Prestegaard made 1-of-2 from the line and Wolter again scored inside to cap an 8-0 run that put the Bees in front 71-64 with two minutes left. Wolter, Anna Plumer and Prestegaard combined for four free throws over the final 46 seconds to seal the victory.

Prestegaard and Wolter came up big down the stretch. The two combined for 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the fourth. As a team, the Bees were 8-of-13 from the floor in the final frame.

The late surge helped St. Ambrose shoot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) for the game. After a strong start, Trinity Christian (8-12, 5-8 CCAC) shot just 5-for-20 in the fourth to finish at 44.3 percent (27-of-61) overall.

SAU (13-7, 9-4 CCAC) did most of its damage inside, outscoring TCC 46-20 in the paint. Prestegaard was responsible for much of that, finishing with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Wolter shook off an 0-for-6 start from the floor by hitting six of her final seven shots in scoring 16 points. Thole was 6-of-7 and scored 14. Plumer was the fourth Bee to score in double figures, dropping in 11.

Kaitlyn Brunson ended with five points and matched Plumer with a team-best three assists. Caroline Cool came off the bench to also score five points while Allie Govert scored two.

St. Ambrose will play its second of three straight games on the road Wednesday with a contest at Cardinal Stritch.
