Bees drop overtime thriller to Tigers

Despite huge nights from Jaynee Prestegaard, Abby Wolter and Caitlyn Thole, St. Ambrose fell to Olivet Nazarene 103-100 in overtime in a matchup of CCAC heavyweights Wednesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

The SAU trio combined for 78 points, 30 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals and nine blocks, with a school-record-tying eight blocks coming from Prestegaard, but the Bees couldn't withstand a late overtime charge from the up-tempo Tigers.

Each of the three Bees contributed two points to open the extra session to give St. Ambrose its largest lead of the game at 94-88 with 3:15 to play. But Olivet Nazarene (11-6, 8-2 CCAC) responded with eight straight points to grab a 96-94 lead with two minutes left. Wolter scored on back-to-back possessions to put SAU back in front inside the final minute.

The Tigers again responded, connecting on their 13th and final 3-pointer of the game, to retake a 99-98 lead. Thole drove baseline on the Bees' next possession but wasn't able to convert, which led to two Tiger free throws for a 101-98 advantage. Following a timeout, Anna Plumer had a good look at a long three but it was off the mark. ONU hit two more free throws with 9.3 seconds on the clock to take a five-point lead. Prestegaard hit a pair from the line with five seconds left before the Tigers dribbled out the clock.

St. Ambrose held Olivet Nazarene to 32-percent shooting from the field as the Tigers hit just 33 of their 103 attempts. ONU was also just 13-of-50 from beyond the arc.

SAU, which shot better than 58 percent from the floor, was scoreless from 3-point range (0-for-7) and converted just 18-of-28 from the line and had another free throw taken away for a lane violation. The Bees also turned the ball over 30 times leading 30 to Tiger points.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair that saw Olivet Nazarene take its largest lead of the night at 27-17 in the first minute of the second quarter. Behind eight points from Prestegaard, Wolter and Thole in the period, St. Ambrose was able to take a 45-41 lead at the half. The game was tied at 67-67 entering the final frame.

The largest lead either team enjoyed in the fourth was the Tigers' 88-84 advantage with less than a minute left. But Thole knocked down a jumper, and after a Wolter steal, Thole hit game-tying free throws with 10 seconds left. Prestegaard blocked a potential game-winning shot in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.

Prestegaard scored a career-best 34 points on 13-of-18 shooting and matched Annie Smith's school record with her eight blocks. She also tied her career high with 16 rebounds.

Wolter was 9-of-15 from the floor in scoring 24 points. She added eight boards and a pair of steals.

Thole, who was 9-of-13 shooting, scored 20 to go along with six rebounds, six assists and three steals.

Caroline Cool and Olivia Cantu each came off the bench to score six points. Plumer and Mel Stewart each netted five.

St. Ambrose, which slipped to sixth place in a tightly-bunched top of the CCAC, dropped to 11-6 overall and 7-3 in the conference. The Bees will visit Roosevelt Saturday.
