Big first half allows Bees to cruise past Trojans

St. Ambrose used a dominant first half to roll to a 78-49 win at Trinity International Tuesday afternoon. The Bees led 49-18 at the break, doing it from the line in the first quarter, from the field in the second, and behind their defense the entire way.

SAU was just 6-of-15 from the floor in the opening period but converted 14-of-17 free throw attempts. Trinity International (2-11, 1-7 CCAC) shot just 5-of-15 as St. Ambrose built a 26-12 lead.

In the second, the Bees were just 2-of-2 from the line, but they hit 9-of-19 field goal attempts and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The defense was even better as the Trojans shot 2-of-13.

St. Ambrose got contributions up and down the lineup in that first half in running its winning streak to six games.

Abby Wolter led the way with 15 points and five rebounds. Anna Plumer scored nine points, Caitlyn Thole had eight, and Jaynee Prestegaard recorded seven points and nine boards. Kaitlyn Brunson and Caroline Cool each scored three points while Maggie McDonald and Olivia Cantu had two points apiece.

Plumer buried a three to open the scoring in the third quarter and the outcome was never in doubt from there.

St. Ambrose finished 7-of-14 on 3-pointers and turned 23 TIU turnovers into 18 points. The Trojans were held to less than 32-percent shooting, including a 3-of-18 performance from 3-point range.

Wolter (19 points) and Plumer (17) each scored in double figures as all 12 Bees who played scored.

Brunson came off the bench to finish with nine points. Thole scored eight and Prestegaard collected seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Mel Stewart, Olivia Harter, Allie Govert and Halle Ciesielczyk also scored in the win.

SAU, now 8-4 overall and 5-2 in the CCAC, will step out of conference play to host Mount Mercy next Thursday, Dec. 29.
