SAU defeats Governors State 66-60

St. Ambrose held Governors State without a field goal over the final five-plus minutes to hold on for a 66-60 road win Saturday afternoon.

The Jaguars' final basket came with 5:23 to play to trim the Bees' lead to 59-58. But SAU only surrendered two free throws the rest of the way, forcing GSU to miss its final six shots and commit a pair of turnovers down the stretch.

An Abby Wolter three-point play gave St. Ambrose some breathing room at 62-58 just seconds after Governors State had pulled to within a point. Olivia Cantu added two free throws to extend the lead to 64-58.

GSU (3-11, 2-6 CCAC) got its two points from the line to pull to within 64-60 with 1:25 to go before Mel Stewart ended the scoring with two free throws inside the final minute.

In a game that featured 11 ties and eight lead changes, neither team led by more than six points.

The Bee defense was the story of the game. SAU limited GSU to 21-of-60 shooting, a 35-percent mark. The Jaguars were only 3-of-18 (16.7 percent) from beyond the arc.

St. Ambrose also finished with a 50-36 rebounding advantage.

Caitlyn Thole led the Bees with 19 points. Wolter scored 15 to go along with a team-best eight rebounds. Stewart scored 11 points.

Anna Plumer finished with seven while Jaynee Prestegaard and Caroline Cool each netted six.

St. Ambrose, now 7-4 overall and 4-2 in the CCAC, will visit Trinity International Tuesday.
