Prestegaard ties school record in win over Bellevue

Jaynee Prestegaard tied a school record for most field goals in a game without a miss as St. Ambrose defeated Bellevue 69-64 Saturday for its fourth straight win.

Prestegaard was a perfect 9-for-9 in matching Chris Sikkema's 33-year-old school record set against Benedictine in 1989. Prestegaard knocked down three shots in both the second and third quarters in scoring a game-high 24 points.

Her only field goal in the opening quarter came during an early 10-0 run that gave the Bees a lead they would never relinquish.

After Bellevue (6-6) opened the game's scoring, Mel Stewart, Abby Wolter and Prestegaard combined for the next 10 points. Wolter led the way with six early. That run sparked SAU to a 19-10 lead after one quarter.

The lead grew to as many as 15 points midway through the second quarter as a Prestegaard layup put St. Ambrose in front 30-15.

And while the Bees never surrendered the lead, they were pushed in the final period.

With the Bees leading 56-45 midway through the fourth, the Bruins went on a 9-0 run to get within 56-54 with four minutes left. Prestegaard and Stewart each knocked down a pair of free throws to restore a six-point advantage.

Bellevue made a final charge in the last minute to get within 62-60. Anna Plumer made two free throws to extend to a four-point lead. The Bruins came right back with a basket before Wolter scored to give St. Ambrose a 66-62 lead with 27 seconds remaining. After Bellevue missed a 3-point try, Prestegaard split two free throws for a 67-62 lead. The Bruins scored to again make it a one-possession game, but Prestegaard closed out the win and tied the school record with a layup in the final seconds to complete the scoring.

Wolter supported Prestegaard with 18 points, going 8-of-14 from the floor. The two helped St. Ambrose overcome a 2-for-10 effort from beyond the arc and a 19-of-32 performance from the line.

Stewart scored nine points to go along with nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots. Plumer scored seven and Caitlyn Thole netted six while handing out five assists.

Caroline Cool and Olivia Cantu combined for five points off the Bee bench.

Prestegaard, Wolter, Plumer and Thole each pulled down six boards in the win.

SAU, now 6-4 overall, will return to CCAC action next Saturday with a game at Governors State.
