Fast start gets St. Ambrose past Haskell

St. Ambrose rode a hot start to a 76-56 home victory over Haskell Indian Nations Wednesday night.

Behind two quick layups from Jaynee Prestegaard, the Bees hit five of their first six shots from the floor in racing to an 11-3 lead just two-and-a-half minutes into the game. Then after a Haskell basket, SAU ran off eight straight points, the first six coming on back-to-back three-point plays from Abby Wolter, to go up 19-5. The margin was 26-16 after the first quarter, a quarter in which the Fightin' Indians shot just 30.8 percent from the field.

The Bee defense completely dominated the second period. Haskell shot just 2-of-13 from the field and misfired on all eight of its 3-point attempts in scoring just four points in the frame. That allowed SAU to fight through some of its own offensive struggles to build a 36-20 halftime lead.

St. Ambrose didn't allow Haskell to shoot much better than that the rest of the way. Haskell (5-10) finished at just 31.1 percent overall and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. SAU (5-4) also forced 24 turnovers to move above .500 on the year.

Wolter scored a game-high 25 points, connecting on 11-of-14 from the field. She also pulled down nine rebounds and was a major reason SAU outscored Haskell 48-22 in the paint.

Mel Stewart and Anna Plumer each scored 12 points. Plumer added six boards, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot in the win.

Prestegaard finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Caroline Cool netted five points. Olivia Harter, Allie Govert and Olivia Cantu, who led the team with 10 rebounds, each scored three. Caitlyn Thole and Maggie McDonald added two points apiece.

The Bees, winners of three in a row, will host Bellevue Saturday at 1 p.m.
