SAU drops 115-107 shootout at Olivet Nazarene

St. Ambrose did what it could, but 32 turnovers proved too much to overcome in a 115-107 loss at Olivet Nazarene Wednesday night.

Those 32 turnovers led to 38 Tiger points as the Bees fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the CCAC.

SAU was able to stay close by shooting better than 58 percent from the floor and controlling the paint. The Bees outscored the up-tempo Tigers 70-42 inside and out-rebounded them 46-39.

St. Ambrose also got off to a fast start. Jaynee Prestegaard and Abby Wolter combined for 15 of the team's first 17 points, and Mel Stewart followed with her own personal 5-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer that gave the Bees their largest lead of the game at 22-11 with three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The lead was 28-21 after one.

But after a Prestegaard layup put the margin at 34-29 two minutes into the second period, Olivet Nazarene (3-2, 2-0 CCAC) made a run. The Tigers scored the game's next 11 points to go in front 40-34. From there, the teams stayed close into the fourth.

Down just 94-90 following two Caroline Cool free throws with 6:32 to play, the Bees surrendered an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to allow the Tigers to take their largest lead of the game at 105-92. SAU battled back and a Stewart 3-pointer capped a 10-0 Bee run that closed the gap to 105-102 with two minutes remaining.

Olivet Nazarene immediately responded with a three of its own, and following a St. Ambrose turnover, ONU hit a free throw to extend to a 109-102 lead. The Tigers hit all six of their free throw attempts over the final 30 seconds to complete a 30-of-41 effort from the line in closing out the win.

The loss included some big individual performances.

Wolter finished 14-of-22 from the floor in scoring a career-high 31 points. She also pulled down five rebounds.

Prestegaard was an even more efficient 10-of-12 from the field in scoring 21 points to go along with game highs of 11 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Stewart scored 18; Caitlyn Thole came off the bench to record 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists; and Cool netted 13 points. Olivia Cantu chipped in with six points and six boards. Anna Plumer matched Thole with six assists. Abby Lundquist was credited with three assists.

The Bees will next host Trinity Christian Saturday.
