Bees bounce back with big win over Eagles

Already with winning streaks of six and 16 games this season, St. Ambrose got started on what it hopes is a third long winning stretch with a 68-52 win at Judson Saturday afternoon.

After losing for just the second time all season Thursday night, the Bees made an early statement Saturday. SAU (23-2, 16-2 CCAC) was 5-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line in outscoring Judson 15-6 in the opening quarter. The Eagles (5-17, 4-12 CCAC) were just 3-of-14 from the floor over the game's first 10 minutes.

Five different Bees scored as part of a 12-2 run that closed the period. Madeline Prestegaard had four of those points that turned an early 4-3 deficit into a 15-6 lead.

SAU never trailed from there. Back-to-back jumpers from Shayne Smith and Mel Stewart closed the second quarter to extend the lead to 30-20 at the half.

Smith opened the third quarter scoring with a 3-pointer. Jaynee Prestegaard followed with a layup and Smith added two free throws to quickly push the lead to 37-20. The margin ballooned to as many as 22 points late in the third and St. Ambrose led comfortably the rest of the way.

SAU shot an even 50 percent in the win, connecting on 24 of its 48 attempts from the field. The Bees were also 17-of-20 from the line.

Kylie Wroblewski led a balanced scoring attack with 16 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

Smith scored nine points and Anna Plumer netted eight. Abby Lundquist and Madeline Prestegaard each came off the bench to contribute seven points. Stewart and Jaynee Prestegaard scored six points apiece, while Maddy Cash ended with five points and Sarah Goldensoph added four.

Madeline Prestegaard hauled in a team-high seven rebounds to help St. Ambrose to a 37-28 advantage on the boards.

Judson shot under 30 percent from the floor in the loss.

SAU will return home to host Trinity Christian Monday.
