Streak at 13 as St. Ambrose downs Roosevelt 66-40

St. Ambrose battled through a rough first quarter to run past Roosevelt 66-40 Saturday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena. That extended the Bees' winning streak to 13 games and moved the team to 19-1 overall and 12-1 in the CCAC.

Some first-quarter struggles nearly derailed the run.

SAU shot just 5-of-22 from the field and committed five turnovers over the game's first 10 minutes. But thanks to a 17-7 rebounding advantage, which included 10 offensive boards, six coming from Kylie Wroblewski and three from Jaynee Prestegaard, the Bees trailed just 15-13 entering the second quarter.

St. Ambrose more than made up for its struggles in the second.

The Bees shot a blistering 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the field over those next 10 minutes. Six different players scored in the period, with Wroblewski and Prestegaard each scoring six to lead the way. SAU assisted on nine of its 10 field goals in the quarter. Madeline Prestegaard collected three of those assists.

The defense also helped turn the tide.

After watching the Lakers shot at a nearly 43-percent clip in the opening frame, St. Ambrose limited Roosevelt to 2-of-12 shooting in the second. A one-time 15-9 Laker lead in the closing minutes of the first quarter was erased thanks to a 13-0 Bee spurt. Roosevelt (5-9, 4-6 CCAC) was held scoreless for a more than eight-minute stretch bridging the first two periods.

In all, SAU outscored RU 21-5 in the second to grab a 34-20 halftime lead.

Wroblewski and Shayne Smith opened the second-half scoring to extend the lead to 18 points. Roosevelt closed to within 10 at 41-31 but an Avari Everts jumper and three points from Madeline Prestegaard helped rebuild a 46-31 lead entering the fourth.

Wroblewski scored the first basket in the final frame and SAU pushed ahead by as many as 29 late before claiming the 66-40 victory.

Days after scoring a career-high 33 points in a win at Olivet Nazarene, Wroblewski led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds Saturday. She finished 8-of-14 from the floor.

Anna Plumer drilled four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points to go along with six boards. Jaynee Prestegaard added 11 points and eight rebounds. Smith registered six points, five assists and five steals, and Maddy Cash totaled four points, seven boards, four assists, two blocks and a steal.

Sarah Goldensoph came off the bench to score five points. Madeline Prestegaard, Everts, Abby Lundquist and Olivia Cantu also each scored in the win.

St. Ambrose shot better than 56 percent from the floor over the final three quarters to finish at 44.4 percent for the game. Roosevelt went the other way. After making 6-of-14 attempts in the first, the Lakers hit just 7-of-43 the rest of the way. They finished at 22.8 percent for the game, including a 17.4 percent mark (4-of-23) from beyond the arc. SAU also outrebounded RU 49-32.

The Bees will put their winning streak on the line Wednesday with a conference matchup at Indiana Northwest.
