Bees defeat Governors State for sixth straight victory

Hours before departing for a two-game swing in Texas, St. Ambrose took care of business by picking up a 72-53 CCAC win over Governors State Friday night at Lee Lohman Arena.

The win gave SAU (12-1, 8-1 CCAC) its second six-game winning streak this season.

It was a 15-point run in the opening quarter that sparked St. Ambrose.

Trailing 9-6 three minutes into the game, the Bees would hold the Jaguars scoreless over the next six-plus minutes. Anna Plumer tied the score with a 3-pointer. That was followed by four points apiece from Jaynee Prestegaard and Shayne Smith, and two points each from Madeline Prestegaard and Abby Lundquist. A Smith layup capped the run that gave SAU a 21-9 lead inside the final minute of the quarter.

The Bees shot better than 57 percent in that first period.

St. Ambrose continued to add to its lead, ultimately taking a 25-point advantage at 57-32 in the final minutes of the third quarter.

Governors State (5-9, 4-5 CCAC) made a run in the fourth. What was a 23-point edge entering the frame became just a nine-point lead with slightly more than four minutes remaining.

But Wroblewski scored inside and after a defensive stop, Maddy Cash found Madeline Prestegaard for a layup to extend the lead to 64-51. The Jaguars got within 64-51, but a Jaynee Prestegaard jumper and a Kylie Wroblewski three-point play effectively sealed the win.

Jaynee Prestegaard led a balanced scoring attack with 13 points. She added 10 rebounds. Three other Bees each scored 12 points. Madeline Prestegaard was 6-of-8 from the floor, Plumer hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and Wroblewski netted all 12 of her points in the second half.

Smith scored 11 to give St. Ambrose five players in double figures. Cash totaled eight points, five boards and four assists. Lundquist finished with four points.

SAU shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, connecting on 28-of-57 in the win. Thanks to Plumer, the Bees were 7-of-13 from 3-point range. St. Ambrose also finished with a 38-23 advantage on the boards.

The Bees will now head south for games at Our Lady of the Lake Monday and at Texas Lutheran Tuesday.
