Four score in double figures as SAU wins fifth in a row

Madeline Prestegaard led four Bees in double figures as St. Ambrose opened the season with its fifth-straight win, a 78-67 decision at Roosevelt Saturday afternoon.

And while Prestegaard got off to a good start, scoring the team's first four points, it was Anna Plumer who sparked a big first quarter. Plumer knocked down four 3-pointers in the period to help SAU to a 26-9 lead. Two of those triples came part of a quarter-closing 14-0 run that turned a 12-9 lead into that 17-point advantage.

Prestegaard started the second-quarter scoring with a layup and Maddy Cash hit a free throw to extend the run to 17 points bridging the first two frames.

Roosevelt (2-3, 2-1 CCAC) rallied to within eight points but behind a three-point play from Prestegaard and two free throws apiece from Shayne Smith and Plumer, St. Ambrose restored a 42-29 lead at the half.

The Lakers closed to get within four at 45-41 midway through the third quarter but Prestegaard had the answer, scoring on back-to-back possessions. Sarah Goldensoph followed with two points of her own to push the lead to 51-41.

St. Ambrose led by at least eight points the rest of the way.

Prestegaard finished 10-of-13 from the field in reaching her 22 points. Kylie Wroblewski was 6-of-10 and 7-of-8 from the line in adding 19 points.

Thanks in large part to those two, SAU shot better than 49 percent from the floor as a team. That, along with limiting the Lakers to 35-percent shooting, helped the Bees survive committing 21 turnovers.

Plumer scored 17 points and Jaynee Prestegaard came off the bench to net 10. Jaynee Prestegaard also led the team with eight rebounds, while Madeline Prestegaard, Plumer and Cash each came down with seven. Wroblewski and Smith had six boards each.

Cash had six of the team's 24 assists on 28 made field goals. Smith, Plumer and Wroblewski each were credited with four assists.

St. Ambrose (5-0, 3-0 CCAC) will return home to host Trinity International Wednesday.
