Fast start propels Bees to big win over Eagles

St. Ambrose made four of its first five shots from the floor and never looked back in a 71-39 win over Judson Wednesday in Lee Lohman Arena.

Shayne Smith knocked down two jumpers early, Jaynee Prestegaard hit another, Anna Plumer buried a 3-pointer. The Bees' only miss from the field in the first two-plus minutes was hauled in by Madeline Prestegaard, and she was fouled on the put-back attempt leading to a pair of free throws.

When Smith scored on a driving layup, the lead was 13-2 three-and-a-half minutes in.

The Bees didn't let up in a dominant first quarter.

The team connected on 11-of-17 shots over the game's first 10 minutes, which included a 3-of-7 mark from 3-point range. Four of SAU's 12 rebounds in the period came on the offensive end, while Judson grabbed four rebounds total in the quarter. It all added up to a 28-14 advantage.

The margin continued to grow from there as St. Ambrose locked in defensively.

The lead was 45-21 at the half after SAU outscored Judson 17-7 in the second quarter.

After shooting better than 55 percent in that first half, SAU came back to earth in the third quarter, hitting just 5-of-24 shots from the field. But the lead continued to expand as the Bees limited the Eagles to 3-of-14 shooting in the third. That came on the heels of forcing Judson into 3-of-20 shooting in the second.

Four Bees finished in double figures with Kylie Wroblewski leading the way. She finished with a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds in only 20 minutes.

Smith scored 13 to go along with eight boards. Maddy Cash netted 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out four assists. Madeline Prestegaard scored 10 points and also pulled down seven boards.

Jaynee Prestegaard narrowly missed a double-double of her own, totaling nine points and 10 rebounds. Plumer recorded seven points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Sarah Goldensoph (4 points) and Avari Everts (2 points) also got in the scoring column in the win. Goldensoph and Olivia Cantu each hauled in three rebounds and Halle Ciesielczyk grabbed two. Ruby Farley also had a board as the Bees finished with a 62-29 rebounding advantage.

St. Ambrose, now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the CCAC, will visit conference foe Roosevelt Saturday.
