Season ends with quarterfinal loss at Olivet Nazarene

A strong shooting night was overshadowed by turnovers as St. Ambrose saw its season come to a close with a 97-82 loss at Olivet Nazarene in a quarterfinal game of the CCAC Tournament Thursday night.

The Bees shot nearly 55 percent from the floor overall, including a 53.8-percent mark from beyond the arc, but that wasn't enough to make up for 29 turnovers, which led to 28 Tiger points.

The turnovers, and surrendering 20 offensive rebounds, allowed Olivet Nazarene to attempt 34 more field goals that St. Ambrose. The Tigers were 35-of-96 from the floor and 19-of-53 on 3-point tries, while the Bees managed to knock down 34-of-62 shots, including 7-of-13 from 3-point range.

SAU stayed with the up-tempo Tigers for much of the first half, and led 19-18 on a Sarah Goldensoph layup late in the first quarter. But turnovers on the Bees' next two possessions fueled a 7-0 ONU run that put the deficit at 25-19 after one.

Despite falling behind by 14 and committing 11 turnovers in the period, the Bees hung close in the second quarter and a pair of late Anna Plumer 3-pointers had the team down 49-39 at the half.

But after Abby Lownik cut the gap to 56-48 with a layup midway through the third quarter, St. Ambrose ran out of gas.

ONU opened up a 16-point lead after three and pushed the advantage to as many as 20 in the final frame en route to a spot in the conference tournament semifinals Saturday.

Kylie Wroblewski capped her sophomore campaign with a 22-point, 16-rebound performance. She also blocked four shots.

Plumer hit 5-of-6 from beyond the arc in scoring 15. Jamie Martens had 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Madeline Prestegaard (8 points), Mel Stewart (7) and Lownik (6) combined for 21 points off the Bee bench. Maddy Cash ended with seven points, five rebounds and a game-high 10 assists in the loss.

St. Ambrose finishes the year with a 12-8 record.
