Bees drop heartbreaker to Wolves

Timeah Stotts drove for a game-winning layup with 0.5 seconds left to hand St. Ambrose a heart-breaking 53-51 loss in Lee Lohman Arena Wednesday night.

The late basket came after the Bees had plenty of chances down the stretch. But after Kylie Wroblewski hit two free throws to tie the game at 51-51 with 2:19 remaining, SAU would not score again. The Bees went 0-for-5 from the floor and committed two turnovers over the final two minutes.

Wroblewski, playing for the first time since Dec. 19, had a chance to tie the game late, but her hurried shot at the buzzer was blocked.

In a defensive struggle, neither team shot 33 percent from the field.

St. Ambrose (10-7, 5-5 CCAC) shot just 29.5 percent overall and 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc. Cardinal Stritch (8-10, 6-4 CCAC) shot 32.8 percent and a dismal 14.3 percent (3-of-21) on threes.

The Bees were also plagued by turnovers, committing 20 in the loss.

The Wolves built a 21-12 lead early in the second quarter but the Bee defense held them to just two points over the final seven-plus minutes of the frame to climb back into the game. Abby Lundquist capped a 14-2 run with a 3-pointer to give St. Ambrose a 26-23 lead at the break.

Jaynee Prestegaard's layup gave SAU a 32-27 advantage in the opening minutes of the third quarter. But then the Bees hit a dry spell. The Wolves scored 14 points in a row to grab a 41-32 lead. A layup from Jamie Martens and 3-pointers from Lundquist and Maddy Cash cut the deficit to 41-40 after three.

The final period went back and forth with Cardinal Stritch ultimately grabbing a 51-47 lead inside the final four minutes. Free throws from Martens and Wroblewski knotted the score at 51-51 setting up the late game-winner.

Wroblewski led St. Ambrose with 11 points in 18 minutes off the bench. She added six rebounds and three assists.

Cash scored 10 points while Madeline Prestegaard netted nine. Jaynee Prestegaard grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Marten totaled four points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

SAU is scheduled to close the regular season at Governors State Saturday before beginning CCAC Tournament play next Tuesday.
