Bees miss out on chance to take down Tigers

Five Bees scored in double figures but St. Ambrose let a late chance slip away in a 94-89 loss to Olivet Nazarene Wednesday night.

SAU stayed with the high-scoring Tigers the entire way, but 26 turnovers and a failure to grab a late rebound off a missed ONU free throw proved too much to overcome.

Down six points inside the final minute, the Bees battled back to get within a point at 90-89 on a Mel Stewart layup with 17 seconds remaining. After a foul, it looked like St. Ambrose would get a chance to tie the game on its next possession, but the Bees never got that opportunity.

Olivet's Caroline Boehne made the first free throw and missed the second, but she was able to track down her own miss before getting fouled again. This time, she connected on both from the line to extend the lead to 93-89 with 14 seconds left.

Anna Plumer misfired on SAU's next possession before ONU hit one final free throw with three seconds on the clock to account for the final score.

The Bees shot 50 percent from the floor (35-of-70), making one more field goal than the Tigers (34-of-89) despite 19 fewer attempts. SAU also shot better than 38 percent from beyond the arc, with Plumer's 4-of-10 effort leading the way. Maddy Cash finished 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.

SAU held ONU to 38 percent shooting overall and 27 percent from 3-point range.

Plumer scored a team-high 20 points while sharing the team lead with five assists.

Stewart came off the bench to score 16 points. Cash added 15 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Jamie Martens chipped in with 15 points, 11 boards and four assists. Avari Everts netted 13 points. Jaynee Prestegaard pulled down 10 rebounds in the loss.

St. Ambrose, now 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the CCAC, will visit Indiana Northwest Saturday.
