Bees fly past Red Lions on Senior Night

A bit of a slow start didn't stop St. Ambrose from getting a big win on Senior Night.

Eleven different Bees scored in a historic 79-32 victory over Lincoln Christian.

The win was SAU's 1,000th as a program, making St. Ambrose just the fourth NAIA women's basketball program to ever reach that milestone.

The game also held special meaning for Cassidy Darin. The senior, who was honored in Senior Night festivites prior to tip-off, made the start in her first collegiate varsity game. She finished with five points, three rebounds and two assists.

But early, St. Ambrose (8-4) watched Lincoln Christian (3-5) take a 5-1 lead two minutes into the contest. Then it was all SAU.

The Bees ripped off a 19-2 run, behind four points apiece from Madeline Prestegaard, Maddy Cash and Abby Lundquist, to take a 20-7 lead. The lead only grew from there.

SAU outscored LCU 20-5 in the third quarter, 19-9 in the third and 18-6 in the fourth.

The large margin of victory allowed 15 different Bees to get minutes, with 11 of them finding the scoring column.

Anna Plumer came off the bench to lead the way with 17 points. She was 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in finishing 6-of-7 overall from the field.

Prestegaard was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor in scoring 12 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Her sister Jaynee Prestegaard also netted 12 points and blocked six shots.

Cash was the other Bee to finish in double figures, scoring 10 points.

Lundquist scored seven points, Sarah Goldensoph dropped in six and Darin added five. Shay Drish and Halle Ciesielczyk each scored three points and Presley Case and Mel Stewart had two points apiece.

Jamie Martens matched Case with a team-leading four assists and added a game-high three steals.

St. Ambrose shot 50 percent from the field and pulled down a 53-28 edge on the boards. After the Red Lions connected on a 3-pointer to open the scoring, the Bees forced them to miss their final 17 attempts from 3-point range. Lincoln Christian shot just 18 percent overall in the loss.

Along with Darin, the Bees also recognized three senior managers before the game. Jackson Callahan, Emma Krapfl and Haley Rawles were honored for their work with the program.

St. Ambrose returns to CCAC play Saturday with a game at Holy Cross.
