SAU pulls away for 77-59 win over TIU

Anna Plumer led four Bees in double figures as St. Ambrose pulled away in the second half for a 77-59 win over Trinity International Saturday afternoon in Lee Lohman Arena.

The short-handed Bees got contributions up and down the lineup. The perfect example came in a decisive run to end the third quarter.

After Trinity International (3-8, 0-5 CCAC) cut what was a 10-point lead down to 43-39 with three minutes remaining in the third, six different Bees scored during a 13-0 stretch to close the quarter. First Mel Stewart knocked down a jumper. Then Maddy Cash and Plumer scored on back-to-back layups. Madeline Prestegaard converted a three-point play. Then Abby Lundquist got free for a layup before Sarah Goldensoph completed the run with a layup.

The 13 straight points upped the lead to 56-39 entering the final quarter.

The Trojans got no closer than 14 points in the final frame.

The Bees were able to move to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAC despite a slow start. SAU trailed by as many as seven points in the opening quarter as TIU got off to a hot start, shooting 9-of-17 from the field, including a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc.

St. Ambrose got back into the game thanks to its defense. After allowing the Trojans to make those three triples in the first quarter, the Bees limited them to just four more threes over the final three quarter (in 22 attempts), including two in the fourth when the game had already been decided.

SAU outscored TIU 16-5 in the second quarter to grab a 33-26 lead at the half, and ultimately put things away with the big run late in the third.

The Bees limited the Trojans to less than 34 percent shooting for the game.

Plumer finished with career highs in both scoring (17) and rebounding (eight). Madeline Prestegaard (14), Lundquist (13) and Cash (11) joined Plumer in double figures in the win.

Jaynee Prestegaard finished with seven points, a game-high 14 rebounds and four blocked shots. Avari Everts added six points, Stewart scored five and Presley Case added two points, four rebounds and three assists.

The Bees will next host Cardinal Stritch Wednesday.
