St. Ambrose breezes past Waldorf 77-49

St. Ambrose scored the game's first 10 points and never looked back in defeating Waldorf 77-49 at the Judson Christmas Classic in Elgin, Ill., Thursday.

Twelve different Bees scored and three of those finished in double figures in the win.

Madeline Prestegaard led the way, connecting on nine of her 13 field goal attempts in finishing with a game-high 22 points. Jaynee Prestegaard scored 13 points and Sarah Goldensoph came off the bench to net 10 points.

Madeline Prestegaard ignited the early run, scoring the first eight points of the game on three layups and a pair of free throws.

Waldorf (0-7) was able to stay competitive and trailed just 21-14 after one quarter.

But after a great start to the first quarter, SAU put together an even better run to open the second.

Jaynee Prestegaard had seven points, Mel Stewart had four, Madeline Prestegaard and Presley Case had three apice, and Avari Everts added two as the Bees outscored the Warriors 19-0 over the first seven minutes of the second quarter. That opened a 40-14 lead. SAU outscored Waldorf 23-5 in the frame in building a 44-19 lead at the half.

The Bees were never threatened in the second half.

St. Ambrose shot better than 51 percent from the floor in each half and finished at 51.6 percent for the game. Defensively, the Bees limited the Warriors to 35.4 percent shooting.

SAU also controlled the boards, ending with a 43-23 rebounding advantage. Twelve different Bees each grabbed at least one rebound. Goldensoph had a team-best seven boards. Jamie Martens pulled down six to go along with her five points and six assists.

Maddy Cash and Case each handed out five assists. Case was also credited with three steals.

The Bees, now 4-2 overall, will open conference play with a game at Judson Saturday.
