Van Hauen earns record-setting victory in win over Trojans

An illustrious list of coaching greats has a new name at the top.

Krista Van Hauen became the winningest coach in St. Ambrose women's basketball history when the Bees defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 94-49 Wednesday night in Lee Lohman Arena.

Career victory #192 moved Van Hauen past Robin Pingeton (Becker), now the head coach at the University of Missouri. Current University of Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder is third on the all-time list with 165 wins in her time at St. Ambrose.

Despite not playing a game since a season-opening 77-58 win over Culver-Stockton on Oct. 31, Van Hauen's team took control early on the record-setting night.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Maddy Cash and Anna Plumer opened up a 12-4 lead not even four minutes into the contest, and halfway through the opening quarter, five straight points from Jamie Martens pushed the advantage to 19-6.

Hannibal-LaGrange (1-3) did get as close as six points late in the frame but sisters Madeline and Jaynee Prestegaard combined for the final six points of the quarter to restore a 12-point lead.

Kylie Wroblewski started the second quarter with a layup and then Sarah Goldensoph converted a three-point play to extend the lead to 30-13.

The margin was 48-25 at the half and St. Ambrose was never threatened in the second half.

The Bees got what they wanted offensively, shooting better than 61 percent from the floor. Wroblewski led the charge, connecting on 9-of-10 field goals in scoring a game-high 23 points. She was 2-of-2 from beyond the arc and hit 3-of-4 free throw attempts. Wroblewski was also one of five Bees to grab five rebounds.

Plumer was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, which included four 3-pointers, on her way to 14 points. Jaynee Prestegaard came off the bench to net 12 points and Madeline Prestegaard also hit double figures with 10 points. Plumer and both Prestegaards also each pulled down five rebounds.

Martens also had five boards to go along with five points, seven assists, a block and a steal. Maddy Cash also dropped in five points. A total of 13 Bees scored in the record-setting win for their 11th-year head coach.

Van Hauen, now 192-115 overall, and her 2-0 Bees will visit Graceland Saturday afternoon.
