Bees wear down Wildcats for season-opening win

Kylie Wroblewski led four Bees in double figures as St. Ambrose gradually pulled away for a season-opening 77-58 win over Culver-Stockton Saturday afternoon inside Lee Lohman Arena.

SAU methodically wore down Culver, outscoring the Wildcats in each of the four quarters, as the defense appeared to be in mid-season form.

The Bees set the tone early, limiting the Wildcats to 4-of-21 shooting in the opening quarter. Culver (0-1) shot just 25 percent from the floor (8-of-32) in the first half and finished at just 31.8 percent (21-of-66) for the game.

It was a Wroblewski jumper midway through the first quarter that broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Bees a lead they would never relinquish.

The margin was 47-39 with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter before St. Ambrose closed the frame on a back-breaking 10-2 run. Jaynee Prestegaard had the first six points of the spurt, and Jamie Martens closed the quarter with a steal and a layup to extend the lead to 57-41 entering the fourth.

Culver-Stockton got no closer than 13 points in the final quarter.

Wroblewski finished 9-of-13 from the field and led all players with 18 points and 9 rebounds. She led a balanced attack.

Madeline Prestegaard knocked down 7-of-8 free throw attempts in scoring 13 points. She grabbed 6 rebounds. Anna Plumer hit two of the team's four 3-pointers in the game in scoring 12 points. And Jaynee Prestegaard came off the bench to finish with 11 points, all coming in the second half. She pulled down 8 boards.

Martens chipped in with 9 points, while adding 6 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Abby Lownik (5 points), Maddy Cash (4), Abby Lundquist (3) and Avari Everts (2) also contributed offensively.

The win was also Krista Van Hauen's 191st career victory at St. Ambrose, tying her with Robin Pingeton (Becker) as the program's all-time winningest coach.

SAU is next slated to host Missouri Baptist Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
