Season ends at CCAC Tournament

St. Ambrose saw its season come to a close with a pair of tight losses at the CCAC Tournament played in Crown Point, Ind. The No. 5-seeded Bees fell to Trinity Christian 5-3 Thursday before getting knocked out of the postseason with a 5-4 loss to St. Francis Friday.

SAU held leads in both games.

The Bees got on the board in the top of the second in the playoff opener against the Trolls. Erica Ralfs was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mackenzie Stiewe ripped an RBI triple to right to score Ralfs. Mady Reed followed with a single to center to plate a second run.

Trinity Christian got a big two-run double as part of a three-run third inning to go in front 3-2. TCC padded its lead to 5-2 in the fifth.

SAU got a run back in the sixth when Stiewe singled in Alyssa Schumacher. St. Ambrose had a chance for more, but with runners on first and second and two outs, Reed lined out to short to end the threat. Becca Haag reached on a two-out single in the seventh but she was stranded there.

Haag and Stiewe each had two hits. Reed, Schumacher and Reagan Engberg also hit safely.

Ralfs was charged with the loss after throwing four innings. Annebelle Krull and Cara Linnenkamp pitched in relief.

With their backs against the wall in the double-elimination tournament, the Bees got off to an even better start Friday against the Fighting Saints.

St. Francis answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring four times to tie the game.

St. Ambrose stranded a runner in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. And in the bottom of the seventh, USF claimed the walk-off win. A leadoff triple was followed by a single that ended the Bees' year.
