Erickson pitches Bees past Cougars

Emilee Erickson scattered eight hits in a complete-game victory, helping St. Ambrose to a 4-1 win over Saint Xavier in the first game of a doubleheader in Chicago Saturday afternoon. SXU took the second game 5-1.

Erickson struck out five and allowed just one run in picking up her fifth win of the season. The lone run she surrendered came on a solo home run in the second. She kept the Cougars off the scoreboard from there.

The Bees got on the board in the third. Mackenzie Stiewe singled and Shai Erdrich followed with a two-out hit. Taylor Martyn singled through the left side to plate one run and Becca Haag followed with a double to right center to score a pair.

SAU added an insurance run in the fourth. Erica Ralfs started things with a double, and one out later, Alyssa Schumacher singled to up the lead to 4-1. And Erickson made that lead hold up.

Stiewe and Schumacher each had two hits to lead the offense.

The Bee bats went silent in the second game, managing just two hits - a two-out single from Haag in the third and a Kylee Claypool single leading off the seventh. Haag scored SAU's run in the sixth after Saint Xavier (17-11, 5-3 CCAC) had built a 5-0 lead.

Ralfs took the loss. Leah Maro and Annebelle Krull combined to pitch the final three innings.

St. Ambrose (15-21, 4-4 CCAC) will visit Trinity Christian Wednesday.
