Bees unable to complete sweep of Eagles

Alyssa Schumacher homered as part of a three-hit game and drove in three to help lead St. Ambrose to a 9-4 win over Judson in the first game of a doubleheader at St. Vincent's Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles rebounded to claim the second game 8-6.

Shai Erdrich matched Schumacher with three hits and Becca Haag had a pair of hits to back a strong pitching performance from Erica Ralfs in the opener.

The Bees scored early and often, plating all nine runs over the first four innings.

Erdrich helped get things started with a single to lead off the bottom of the first. She stole second and third before scoring on Mady Reed's sacrifice bunt. Reed, who reached on a throwing error, came in to score on a Ralfs double.

Erdrich's single in the second scored Allison Polly for a 3-0 lead. After Judson (4-18, 1-1 CCAC) pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the third, SAU answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame on RBI singles from Schumacher and Reagan Engberg.

The Bees broke things open in the fourth. Taylor Martyn scored on an error before Haag's single scored Erdrich. Schumacher followed with her two-run blast to left to open up a 9-2 lead. The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the seventh to account for the final score.

Ralfs, Polly and Laurel Politsch also had hits in the first game.

Ralfs picked up the win by striking out 10 and allowing just one earned run over six innings. Annebelle Krull pitched the seventh.

St. Ambrose (12-20, 1-3 CCAC) nearly completed the sweep but couldn't hold on to a 4-1 lead. Haag ripped a two-run home run to left in the bottom of the first and Kylee Claypool and Martyn each scored on an error following Erdrich's bunt single in the fourth.

But Judson answered with three runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to go in front 7-4. Erdrich's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth cut the deficit to 7-5. The Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before Mackenzie Stiewe's RBI ground out in the bottom of the inning ended the scoring.

Haag and Erdrich each had two hits in the second game. Politsch, Stiewe, Martyn and Claypool also hit safely.

Leah Maro was charged with the loss in relief of Emilee Erickson. Cara Linnenkamp tossed the final two frames.

St. Ambrose will host Olivet Nazarene Wednesday.
