St. Ambrose loses twice to open CCAC play

It was a rough start to conference play as St. Ambrose dropped a doubleheader at Roosevelt by scores of 4-3 and 4-2 Friday afternoon.

The walk-off loss in the first game came after a late Bees' rally. Trailing 3-0, SAU pulled even in the sixth. Taylor Martyn beat out a bunt single and took second when Shai Erdrich reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Becca Haag walked to load the bases. Erica Ralfs came through with a single to center to score two runs. Paige Kirkman then tied the game with a base hit up the middle. The Bees had a chance at the lead but Ralfs was thrown out at the plate.

St. Ambrose (11-19, 0-2 CCAC) had another chance in the seventh. Alyssa Schumacher and Gracie Jevyak each had one-out hits to put the potential go-ahead run in scoring position, but the Bees weren't able to capitalize.

Roosevelt (7-14, 2-0 CCAC) took advantage. The Lakers loaded the bases with one out. SAU was able to get a ground ball and a force out at the plate to extend the game, but RU got a big two-out hit to win the game.

Kirkman finished with two hits. Emilee Erickson got the loss in relief of Ralfs. Ralfs struck out five over 5 1/3 innings.

Roosevelt was able to jump to an early lead in the second game, scoring once in the first and two times in the third. The Lakers added another run in the fifth to go in front 4-0.

After registering just two hits through six innings, the Bee bats came to life in the seventh. Kirkman singled and pinch runner Reagan Engberg came around to score on Schumacher's single, her second hit of the game. Allison Polly followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit in half before the rally stalled.

Leah Maro was charged with the loss after allowing three earned runs over five innings. Cara Linnenkamp struck out one in her one inning of work.

St. Ambrose will next visit Trinity Christian Tuesday.
