St. Ambrose begins Spring Break trip by splitting doubleheader

St. Ambrose started its Spring Break trip by splitting a pair of one-run games with Northwestern Ohio Saturday in Melbourne, Fla. The Bees won the opener 3-2 before dropping the second game 5-4.

Leah Maro got the complete-game victory in the first game, striking out five while allowing just three hits and not a single earned run.

She was staked to an early lead as St. Ambrose scored all three of its runs in the opening inning. Shai Erdrich and Mady Reed opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles before Erdrich came in to score on a passed ball. Alyssa Schumacher reached on an error that allowed Reed to score. Paige Kirkman followed with an RBI single to put SAU in front 3-0.

Northwestern Ohio (7-7) came back with a pair of runs in the top of the third. St. Ambrose had other opportunities, placing at least one runner on base in six of the seven frames, but was unable to score after the first.

Erdrich finished with two hits. Becca Haag, Reagan Engberg, Erica Ralfs and Taylor Martyn also had hits in the win.

The Bees again struck early in the final game. Erdrich was hit by a pitch and Engberg walked before Haag doubled to center to put SAU in front 2-0 in the top of the first.

The Racers took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first. Haag ripped a one-out double to left to move Engberg to third before Ralfs lifted a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game at 3-3 in the third. But once again UNOH answered in the bottom of the frame to regain a 4-3 advantage.

Mya Millsaps pulled the teams even again in the fifth. She singled and stole second before coming around to score on an error following Erdrich's bunt single.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Northwestern Ohio used a triple followed by a single to score the winning run.

Haag and Millsaps each had two hits. Ralfs was charged with the loss.

St. Ambrose (11-11) will visit Southeastern Monday.
