Bees earn split of doubleheader with Vikings

Six different Bees drove in a run as St. Ambrose earned a split at Augustana with a 6-3 win in the second game of a doubleheader Monday in Rock Island, Ill.

SAU scored two runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings. Becca Haag and Mady Reed ripped RBI doubles to get St. Ambrose off to a fast start in the opening inning. Laurel Politsch had a run-scoring single and Kylee Claypool drove in a run on a ground ball to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fourth. Then in the fifth, Reagan Engberg laced an RBI double to center before an Erica Ralfs ground out pushed the margin to 6-0.

Augustana (3-3) cut the deficit in half with a three-run sixth inning before SAU closed out the victory.

Haag finished with two of the Bees' seven hits. Shai Erdrich and Liz Garcia also each collected a hit.

Emilee Erickson earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings. She struck out four while allowing only three hits. Annebelle Krull pitched a scoreless fifth inning before Leah Maro worked the final two frames.

The win came after St. Ambrose (10-8) was limited to just a pair of hits in a 4-1 loss in the opener.

Both Bee hits came in the first inning. Reed singled with one out, stole second, and Ralfs came through with a two-out double to give SAU a quick 1-0 lead.

But the Vikings answered in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of three walks and two hits to score four runs.

The two teams combined for just two hits over the final six frames. St. Ambrose had its best chance in the fourth, loading the bases with two outs as Paige Kirkman reached on an error, Engberg was hit by a pitch and Haag walked. But the Bees weren't able to come up with a two-out hit and stranded three.

Ralfs was charged with the loss after pitching four innings. Cara Linnenkamp allowed just one hit over the final two innings.

St. Ambrose will play its first outdoor home games of the season when the Bees host No. 18 Grand View Wednesday.
