St. Ambrose splits final Dome Tournament weekend

St. Ambrose picked up two more wins in its final Dome Tournament played in the Ambrose Dome Saturday and Sunday. The Bees earned a 5-4 win in eight innings over Concordia (Mich.) and an 8-6 victory over Mount Mercy. SAU lost to Aquinas 3-1 and a rematch to Concordia 5-1.

St. Ambrose scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat Concordia, a team receiving votes in the NAIA preseason coaches poll.

Each team scored in the first with Alyssa Schumacher's single plating Shai Erdrich and the game remained tied until the eighth. The Cardinals pushed across three runs before the Bees rallied. Allison Polly started the frame on second and Reagan Engberg singled with one out to put runners on the corners. Schumacher followed with a triple to right center and came around to score to tie the game at 4-4 when the catcher was called for obstruction. With two outs, Becca Haag singled. Pinch runner Mya Millsaps stole second and ultimately scored the game winner on Mady Reed's bunt single.

Engberg, Schumacher and Reed each finished with two hits. Erica Ralfs got the win in relief of Emilee Erickson. Ralfs struck out eight over four innings. Erickson registered four strikeouts over the first four frames.

The Bee bats went silent as St. Ambrose collected just two combined hits over losses to Aquinas Saturday and Concordia Sunday. Neither of SAU's two runs came benefit of a hit.

Erdrich led off the bottom of the first by drawing a walk. She stole second and went to third on Engberg's sacrifice before coming in to score on a groundout from Schumacher. That lead held up until the fifth when the Saints tied the game at 1-1 and Aquinas pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Erdrich had a two-out bunt single in the third and Mackenzie Stiewe started the fifth with a double for the only two Bee hits.

Leah Maro allowed just one run on six hits while striking out five over 4 1/3 innings. Ralfs took the loss despite striking out four over the final 2 2/3 innings.

St. Ambrose was no-hit in a rematch with Concordia. The Bees hurt their own cause, committing three errors leading to three unearned runs in the 5-1 loss. The Cardinals scored twice in the first and added three runs in the third. SAU got on the board in the sixth in familiar fashion. Erdrich drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third when the catcher's throw bounced into the outfield. Engberg's grounder to second brought in Erdrich.

Cara Linnenkamp took the loss. She surrendered just two earned runs over four innings. Annebelle Krull pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

The bats came back to life in the tournament finale, an 8-6 win over Mount Mercy. SAU pounded out 14 hits and six Bees - Erdrich, Schumacher, Paige Kirkman, Haag, Ralfs and Taylor Martyn - had two hits.

Engberg and Schumacher each drove in a pair of runs as part of a four-run second inning. The Mustangs came back with four runs in the top of the third to knot the score. Erdrich's steal of home in the fourth put SAU in front for good. Ralfs ripped a two run homer in the fifth to up the lead to 7-4. After Mount Mercy got within 7-6 in the top of the sixth, Kirkman's ground-rule double scored Engberg with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning.

Maro, the third of four Bee pitchers in the game, earned the win after striking out three over two innings. Ralfs picked up the save by getting three strikeouts over the final two innings. Erickson and Chloe Mitchell combined to throw the first three innings.

The Bees will head outdoors to play four games at the Friends Tournament in Wichita, Kan., Friday and Saturday. SAU is scheduled to face No. 17 Ottawa, Avila, Mayville State and Peru State.
