SAU closes regular season with sweep of IU South Bend

St. Ambrose readied for next week's CCAC Tournament by closing the regular season Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Indiana South Bend. The Bees won by scores of 5-0 and 11-6.

SAU, which stranded five baserunners over the first three scoreless innings, ultimately got on the board in the fourth with Cassie Sprout's single bringing in Allison Polly. In the fifth, Mackenzie Stiewe and Polly each had an RBI double to increase the lead to 3-0.

St. Ambrose added two more runs in the sixth. Alyssa Schumacher dropped down a squeeze bunt to plate Shai Erdrich before Kayla Stenger followed with a run-scoring single to end the scoring.

Erdrich finished 3-for-5 while Sprout collected two hits. Ralfs and Maria Provenzano also had hits in the first game.

Four different Bees had multi-hit games in the nightcap. Schumacher went 3-for-4 with three RBIs while Polly was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Ralfs and Paige Kirkman each had two as part of SAU's 14-hit attack.

Trailing 1-0 early, St. Ambrose exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Stiewe, Kirkman, Polly, Provenzano and Erdrich each drove in a run before Schumacher capped the inning with a bases-loaded triple.

Provenzano knocked in two with a double in the fourth and Liz Garcia recorded a sacrifice bunt in the sixth to end the Bee scoring.

Emilee Erickson earned the win after allowing just one earned run over 4 2/3 innings. Kayla Roemer pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.

The Bees will take a 25-23 record (12-8 CCAC) into the CCAC Tournament.
