St. Ambrose loses doubleheader to St. Francis

St. Ambrose dropped a conference doubleheader to St. Francis (Ill.) by scores of 4-1 and 2-1 Monday afternoon at St. Vincent's.

The Bees had strong pitching performances but managed just four hits in each game.

Erica Ralfs was tagged with the loss in the opener. She allowed six hits and two earned runs over four innings. Kayla Roemer gave up just one unearned run over the final three frames.

The teams traded runs in the first inning with Paige Kirkman's single scoring Alyssa Schumacher, who had doubled, to tie the game at 1-1. St. Francis (23-7, 10-2 CCAC) pushed across what proved to be the winning run in the third before adding a pair of insurance runs in the fourth.

Kayla Stenger finished 2-for-2 in the loss.

Schumacher and Kirkman also collected hits in the second game. Ralfs and Allison Polly also had singles.

The Fighting Saints struck early with another first-inning run. The Bees again pulled even when Polly singled to plate Ralfs in the fourth. But in the fifth, USF regained the lead and that proved to be the difference.

Emilee Erickson took a tough loss after surrendering seven hits and just two runs over five innings. She struck out four. Ralfs pitched two scorless innings in relief.

St. Ambrose (20-20, 7-5 CCAC) will visit Saint Xavier Wednesday.
