Big innings late help Bees sweep Eagles

St. Ambrose scored a combined nine runs over the final two innings to sweep a doubleheader at Judson Saturday afternoon. The Bees scored five late runs to win the opener 6-3 before completing the sweep with a four-run sixth inning in an 8-5 win.

SAU (20-18, 7-3 CCAC) grabbed a 1-0 lead on an Alyssa Schumacher RBI ground out in the first inning. The score remained the same until a late offensive explosion from both teams.

Kayla Stenger and Paige Kirkman had run-scoring singles in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 3-0. But Judson came back in the bottom of the frame with three runs to knot the score at 3-3. St. Ambrose answered. Schumacher laid down a bunt and when the throw got away, both Maria Provenzano and Shai Erdrich were able to score to put the Bees back in front. Kirkman later reached on another Eagle error in the inning to plate an insurance run.

Emilee Erickson was able to pitch around an error to strand two in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win. Erickson earned the win in relief, allowing one hit and striking out a pair over 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Erica Ralfs was charged with two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings.

Kirkman, Stenger, Erdrich and Allison Polly each collected two hits in the win.

Erdrich followed that by going 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two RBIs in the second game. And she led the late rally.

After Judson took a 5-4 lead on a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, Provenzao tied the game with a double to right in the top of the sixth. Erdrich followed with a two-run single to give SAU the lead for good. Erdrich later scored on a wild pitch to account for the final score.

Ralfs ripped a solo home run to give SAU a 3-1 lead in the fourth. That followed an RBI single from Cassie Sprout in the first inning and a run-scoring double off the bat of Schumacher in the third. Schumacher added a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Annebelle Krull picked up the win in relief of Erickson. Krull surrendered just two hits while not allowing a run over 2 2/3 innings. Erickson gave up four earned runs over 4 1/3 frames.

St. Ambrose will host St. Francis Monday at 3 p.m.
