SAU settles for non-conference split at Waldorf

A pair of five-run innings proved to be the difference as St. Ambrose split a doubleheader at Waldorf Thursday. The Warriors used a five-run sixth to win the opener 6-5 before the Bees put together a five-run second inning to claim the second game 9-3.

SAU used seven hits and took advantage of a Waldorf error in its outburst. Paige Kirkman, Liz Garcia and Shai Erdrich singled to load the bases with one out. After a Cassie Sprout ground out brought in one run, the Bees pieced together four straight two-out hits. Alyssa Schumacher had a two-run single and Mackenzie Stiewe followed with an RBI double. Erica Ralfs singled to put runners on the corners before Allison Polly plated the fifth run of the frame on a base hit to center.

That gave SAU a 6-1 lead on the heels of a Stiewe RBI single in the first.

Waldorf scored a pair of runs in the third to get within 6-3 before St. Ambrose added three insurance runs in the seventh. Brooke Baker and Garcia each had run-scoring hits to end the scoring.

In all, the Bees totaled 15 hits in the win. Stiewe, Garcia and Ralfs each had three while Schumacher finished with two.

Annebelle Krull got the complete-game win. She allowed just six hits and one earned run while striking out three.

That win nearly gave SAU the sweep but the Bees were unable to hold on to a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth of the first game. Things unraveled as the Warriors collected five hits and used a Bee error to plate five runs. Three of the runs were unearned.

St. Ambrose (18-18) had built its lead thanks to pushing across at least one run in four of the first six innings. Kirkman drove in runs on a fielder's choice in the first and a ground out in the third. Schumacher added an RBI single in the third. Sprout's RBI ground out upped the lead to 4-1 in the fourth before Erdrich scored on an error in the sixth.

Schumacher and Ralfs each collected a pair of hits. Maria Provenzano had the team's only other hit in the game.

Provenzano was also tagged with the loss. She surrendered just three earned runs while striking out four over six innings.

St. Ambrose will return to conference play with a CCAC doubleheader at Judson Saturday.
