St. Ambrose stumbles at Olivet Nazarene

St. Ambrose held leads in both ends of a doubleheader at Olivet Nazarene Tuesday only to see things slip away late. The Bees fell by scores of 10-2 in six innings and 4-3.

It was two big innings late that cost SAU in the opener. Shai Erdrich led off the game with an infield single, moved to second on an error, stole third and scored on a second Tiger error to give the Bees a fast 1-0 lead. Erdrich put St. Ambrose in front 2-1 in the third, scoring on an Alyssa Schumacher base hit.

That proved to be it for the Bee offense as SAU stranded five over the final three innings.

And Olivet Nazarene took advantage. The Tigers pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the third and took the lead on a three-run home run in the fifth. The Tigers tacked on five more runs in the sixth to close out the game.

Erdrich, Paige Kirkman and Allison Polly each had two hits. Schumacher and Kayla Stenger collected a hit apiece.

Erica Ralfs was charged with the loss. Annebelle Krull recorded the final two outs.

The Bees (17-17, 5-3 CCAC) held a lead in the second game until the seventh inning. An RBI double from Stenger plated Reagan Engberg in the first, a Maria Provenzano single brought in Polly in the third, and Ralfs ripped a solo home run to right center in the fifth to put St. Ambrose in front 3-0.

ONU got two of those runs back in the fifth and ultimately tied the game at 3-3 on a solo homer leading off the seventh. That was followed by a walk and a double before the Tigers got the walk-off win on a wild pitch.

Provenzano finished 2-for-2 in the nightcap. Eryn Cornwell walked in each of her two plate appearances.

Emilee Erickson took the loss. She went the distance, striking out seven over six innings.

The Bees will take a break from conference play by visiting Waldorf Thursday.
