Provenzano's triple gets SAU walk-off win over TCC

St. Ambrose scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with a 10-9 win over Trinity Christian in the second game of a doubleheader at St. Vincent's Thursday afternoon. TCC won the opener 1-0.

Down 9-7 after the Trolls plated a pair of runs in the top half of the inning, the Bees went right to work. Paige Kirkman and Kayla Stenger had back-to-back hits and ultimately two runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs. SAU caught a break as a throwing error on an Eryn Cornwell grounder allowed the tying two runs to score. Maria Provenzano followed with a triple plating Cornwell with the winning run.

It capped a crazy game that saw Trinity Christian (10-6, 1-1 CCAC) take an early 3-0 lead before St. Ambrose responded with a six-run third, ignited by a two-run Erica Ralfs home run. The Trolls went back in front by scoring four times in the sixth. The Bees tied it at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth setting up the seventh-inning dramatics.

Kirkman and Alyssa Schumacher each had two hits. Cornwell, Kayla Stenger, Mackenzie Stiewe and Cassie Sprout joined Provenzano and Ralfs with one hit apiece. Ralfs and Cornwell each drove in a pair. Reagan Engberg, Emi Howe, Katie Brewer and Allison Polly each scored a run in the win.

Emilee Erickson started and worked five innings, striking out seven. Kayla Roemer pitched 1 1/3 innings before Annebelle Krull got the final two outs of the seventh to earn the win.

The 10-9 explosion came after a pitchers' dual in the opener. Ralfs allowed just three hits and struck out six in a complete-game effort, but a first-inning run proved to be the difference.

The Bees managed just three hits - a Schumacher bunt single in the first, a Cornwell hit in the third and a Kirkman single leading off the seventh. SAU stranded five in the loss.

St. Ambrose (15-13, 3-1 CCAC) will host Calumet St. Joseph in a CCAC doubleheader next Wednesday.
