Bees open CCAC play with sweep of Trojans

St. Ambrose opened conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from Trinity International by scores of 10-0 and 7-3 Wednesday afternoon in the Ambrose Dome. The first game went six innings.

The Bees pounded out 22 hits over the two games to improve to 14-12 overall and 2-0 in the CCAC.

Playing as the visiting team as the games were originally scheduled for Wheeling, Ill., St. Ambrose struck early in the opener. Shai Erdrich led off with a walk, promptly stole second and moved to third when the catcher's throw slipped into the outfield. Erdrich then stole home for a fast 1-0 lead.

The Bees would tack on two runs in the second on an Eryn Cornwell RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Erica Ralfs. Another throwing error on a stolen base allowed Maria Provenzano to score for a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Reagan Engberg ripped a two-run triple in the fifth and later scored on a wild pitch. SAU added its final three runs on errors in the sixth. One error following a Ralfs' double and the other on a Kayla Stenger ground ball that allowed two runs to score.

Ralfs finished 3-for-3 while Cornwell collected two hits. Ralfs also struck out five over two scoreless innings before turning the game over to three Bee relievers. Kayla Roemer earned the win after allowing just a single hit over two innings. Provenzano and Annebelle Krull combined to pitch the final two frames.

St. Ambrose banged out 14 hits in the second game. Three of those came off the bat of Paige Kirkman. Erdrich, Kayla Weber and Cassie Sprout each had two hits.

SAU scored all seven of its runs over the first five innings. Cornwell got the scoring started with a two-run single in the first inning. Engberg drove in three, one on a ground out in the second and two more on a triple in the gap in the fourth. Alyssa Schumacher and Brooke Baker added RBI doubles in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Roemer picked up her second win of the day, working two scoreless innings in relief. Emilee Erickson went the first two innings, striking out four while allowing just one hit. Cornwell got two outs before Krull finished the final 2 1/3 innings.

St. Ambrose will turn around and host Trinity Christian outdoors at St. Vincent's in a CCAC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Thursday.
