St. Ambrose on Spring Break trip to Florida

St. Ambrose on Spring Break trip to Florida

St. Ambrose will spend its Spring Break in Florida, playing four doubleheaders over four days. The Bees enter the trip with a 10-6 record.

Wednesday, March 22

Florida National 4, St. Ambrose 3 (Game 1)
A three-run fourth inning proved to be the difference as Florida National defeated St. Ambrose 4-3 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday. The big inning erased an early 2-1 SAU advantage thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Alyssa Schumacher that scored Shai Erdrich in the first inning and an Erica Ralfs single that plated Kayla Stenger in the second. Down 4-2, the Bees rallied in the seventh. Kayla Stenger lined a one-out double to center and Ralfs singled to move pinch runner Liz Garcia to third. Brooke Baker came through with an RBI single to cut the margin to 4-3. Erdrich grounded out to move both runners into scoring position with two outs, but the comeback ended there. Ralfs finished 2-for-2 and Stenger was 2-for-3 in the loss. Erdrich, Schumacher and Allison Polly each had one hit. Emilee Erickson took the loss after allowing just one earned run over three innings in relief of Ralfs.

Florida National 4, St. Ambrose 3 (Game 2)
St. Ambrose struck early but could not hold on in losing the second game to Florida National by an identical 4-3 score. Kayla Stenger blasted a three-run home run in the first inning, but those proved to be the only runs the Bees would get. Stenger's homer to left center followed a one-out walk to Reagan Engberg and a single by Alyssa Schumacher. But the Conquistadors slowly chipped away, scoring one run in the second, another in the fourth and a tying run in the sixth. Then Florida National walked off with the one-run win in the seventh. A one-out triple to right forced SAU to intentionally walk the next batters to load the bases. A fly ball to left was deep enough to plate the winning run. St. Ambrose had more chances to score, leaving the bases loaded in the third and stranding single runners in the first, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Schumacher (3-for-4) and Stenger (2-for-4) did most of the offensive damage. Shai Erdrich, Engberg and Erica Ralfs also had hits. Annebelle Krull took the loss. Eryn Cornwell scattered seven hits while allowing just one earned run over three innings. Kayla Roemer also gave up one run over three innings of relief.

Tuesday, March 21

Keiser 7, St. Ambrose 2 (Game 1)
St. Ambrose managed just four hits in dropping the first game of a doubleheader at Keiser Tuesday by a 7-2 score. The Seahawks got all the runs they would need in the first, scoring three times in large part thanks to three Bee errors off SAU starter Erica Ralfs. Two of those runs were unearned. Keiser tacked on two more runs in the fourth before St. Ambrose got on the board in the fifth. Allison Polly ripped a one-out double and Ralfs followed with a single to left. Ralfs intentionally got caught in a run-down and when the ball got away, Polly scored and Ralfs advanced to third. Eryn Cornwell came through with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 5-2. But the Seahawks answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth and added one more in the sixth. Reagan Engberg and Mackenzie Stiewe also had hits in the loss. Ralfs went four innings and took the loss before Annebelle Krull pitched the final two innings.

Keiser 6, St. Ambrose 5 (Game 2)
Keiser scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, including the game winner on a bases-loaded walk, to walk off with a 6-5 win to complete the sweep. The teams traded runs in the first inning with Allison Polly's groundout scored Reagan Engberg for the St. Ambrose run. The Bees then put together a four-run third. Shai Erdrich gave SAU the lead by scoring on a wild pitch. Polly, Mackenzie Stiewe and Brooke Baker followed with RBI hits to push the lead to 5-1. Keiser responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. St. Ambrose nursed the 5-4 lead into the seventh. But there, four of the first five Seahawks collected hits to tie the game at 5-5 before a walk ended the game. Engberg, Polly and Cassie Sprout each had two hits. Emilee Erickson, Kayla Roemer and Maria Provenzano all pitched for the Bees.

Monday, March 20

St. Thomas 8, St. Ambrose 3 (Game 1)
St. Thomas used a five-run fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and pull away for an 8-3 win over St. Ambrose in the first game of a doubleheader Monday. It spoiled a 3-for-3 performance at the plate from Alyssa Schumacher. Schumacher also scored the first Bee run, coming in on a Mackenzie Stiewe double in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1. Reagan Engberg followed later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Liz Garcia to give SAU a 2-1 lead. After St. Thomas scored twice in the bottom of the fourth, Brooke Baker again pulled the teams even with a single to right to score Allison Polly. But the Bobcats came back with their five-run frame to get the win. Polly, Erica Ralfs, Kayla Stenger and Ava Erramouspe also had hits for the Bees. Annebelle Krull took the loss in relief of Ralfs. Eryn Cornwell pitched a scoreless sixth inning.

St. Thomas 4, St. Ambrose 2 (Game 2)
St. Ambrose out-hit St. Thomas 7-4, but could only manage a pair of runs in a 4-2 loss in the second game. Those two runs came in the top of the third. Reagan Engberg and Kayla Stenger each had run-scoring singles to give the Bees a 2-0 lead. But after picking up four hits in that inning, SAU managed just one more the rest of the way. The Bobcats cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third before taking the lead for good with a two-run fifth inning. St. Thomas tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Emilee Erickson was charged with the loss despite striking out seven over 4 1/3 innings. Kayla Roemer pitched 1 2/3 innings. Stenger finished with two hits while Alyssa Schumacher, Allison Polly, Erica Ralfs and Maria Provenzano each joined Engberg with a single hit.

And the Bees did it after facing an early 1-0 deficit. Provenzano put SAU in front with a two-run single in the second inning. Erdrich then reached on an error, allowing two more runs to score. Erdrich beat out a bunt single to score Allison Polly, and when the throw got away, Provenzano came in to score in the fourth. St. Ambrose tacked on five runs in the fifth. Engberg, Stenger and Provenzano had run-scoring singles and Polly brought in a run on a squeeze bunt. Polly, Erica Ralfs and Mackenzie Stiewe also had hits in the win. Ralfs earned the victory by allowing just two hits and one unearned run over three innings. Annebelle Krull pitched the final two frames.

St. Ambrose 5, Fort Lauderdale 2 (Game 2)
Three Bee pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts as St. Ambrose completed the sweep of Fort Lauderdale with a 5-2 victory. Emilee Erickson got the win after striking out six over the first three innings. Kayla Roemer and Maria Provenzano combined for five strikeouts over the final four frames. Kayla Stenger gave SAU an early lead with an RBI single in the top of the first. With the game tied 1-1, the Bees took the lead for good in the third. Alyssa Schumacher scored after Erica Ralfs drew a walk and stole second. Ralfs later scored on a wild pitch to put St. Ambrose in front 3-1.
