SAU splits home doubleheader with Augustana

A 10-run third inning powered St. Ambrose to a 13-2 five-inning win over Augustana in the first game of a doubleheader at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex Wednesday. The Vikings came back to take the second game 5-2.

Already leading 3-1 thanks to an RBI single from Eryn Cornwell and a two-run triple from Maria Provenzano in the second, SAU broke things open in the third.

The Bees sent 15 hitters to the plate in the frame. And they scored the 10 runs on just four hits. Kayla Stenger got things started by reaching on a one-out error. Mackenzie Stiewe ripped an RBI double. Erica Ralfs followed with a run-scoring double of her own. Cornwell singled to plate another run. Shai Erdrich drew a bases-loaded walk before Reagan Engberg doubled to bring in three more. Stiewe's fielder's choice ground ball scored the eighth run of the inning. Another Augustana error and a wild pitch allowed the final two runs to score.

Ten different Bees scored at least one run in the big win. Cornwell and Ralfs each had two of the team's nine hits. Liz Garcia also had a hit.

Ralfs also earned the win, allowing four hits and one run over three innings. She struck out four. Annebelle Krull tossed the final two frames.

St. Ambrose was only able to scratch out two runs in the second game. That came after Augustana (6-6) pushed across three runs in the top of the first inning.

Down four runs, the Bees got on the board in the third. Erdrich beat out a bunt single and when the throw sailed into the right-field corner, Erdrich raced around the bases to score.

Trailing 5-1, SAU appeared poised for a big inning in the fourth. Engberg led off with a walk. Stenger laced a double into the gap to score Engberg. Cornwell's groundout advanced pinch-runner Garcia to third with just one out. But Garcia ultimately got thrown out at the plate attempting to score on a wild pitch and the rally fizzled.

Erdrich finished 2-for-3 to lead the offense.

Emilee Erickson was charged with the loss. She gave up three earned runs over four innings. Kayla Roemer allowed just one hit over two scoreless innings in relief before Provenzano struck out a pair while pitching the seventh.

St. Ambrose, now 10-6 overall, will begin its Spring Break trip with a doubleheader at Fort Lauderdale Sunday.
