Schumacher's homer powers Bees to sweep of Statesmen

Alyssa Schumacher hit a three-run home run to help St. Ambrose to a 5-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader with William Penn Wednesday at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex. The Bees also took the opener 2-1 in their first outdoor games of the season.

Schumacher's blast broke a 0-0 tie in the third inning. Eryn Cornwell was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Cassie Sprout followed an out later with a base hit. Schumacher then ripped her three-run homer to left center to give the Bees all the runs they would need.

William Penn (3-9) got one run back in the top of the sixth before St. Ambrose went back to work. Erica Ralfs led off by drawing a walk and came around to score on Kayla Stenger's double to right center. Shai Erdrich beat out an infield single to plate Stenger for a 5-1 lead.

Schumacher finished with two hits in the nightcap.

Emilee Erickson picked up the win, allowing just three hits over five scoreless innings. Maria Provenzano earned the save by tossing the final two frames.

That win came on the heels of a strong pitching performance from Ralfs and Annebelle Krull in the opener.

Ralfs surrendered just two hits and one run over 4 1/3 innings. She struck out five. She was handed a 1-0 lead as the Bees scratched out a run in the first. Erdrich and Allison Polly started the frame with back-to-back walks. After Erdrich was caught stealing, Schumacher laid down a sacrifice fly to move Polly to third. Mackenzie Stiewe followed with a two-out double to right center to put SAU in front.

Ralfs nearly made the run hold up before running into trouble in the fifth. Two walks and a hit allowed the Statesmen to tie the game and they threatened for more with runners on the corners with one out. Krull entered the game and escaped the jam, getting a ground out and a strikeout to keep the game tied at 1-1.

St. Ambrose went back ahead in the sixth. Reagan Engberg walked and stole second. One out later, Polly singled to left to plate what proved to be the winning run.

Krull retired the side in order in the seventh to get the win. She allowed just a single walk over the final 2 2/3 innings.

SAU, now 9-5 overall, will host Augustana next Wednesday at SVC.
