Bees split four more in final Dome Tournament

St. Ambrose wrapped up its Ambrose Dome schedule by splitting four games over the weekend. The Bees defeated Mount Marty twice, winning 5-1 Saturday and 2-1 Sunday. SAU fell to Aquinas 4-1 and lost the weekend finale 2-1 to Mount Mercy.

In the first game of the tournament, SAU downed Mount Marty 5-1 behind a pair of strong pitching performances. Erica Ralfs got the win after allowing just one hit and one run over five innings. She struck out eight. Ralfs then turned it over to Annebelle Krull, who surrendered just a single hit over a pair of scoreless innings.

Alyssa Schumacher broke a 0-0 tie in the third by stealing home. Allison Polly double plated Cassie Sprout in the fourth inning to up the lead to 2-0. Mackenzie Stiewe dropped down a squeeze bunt to bring in Polly for a 3-0 lead in the sixth. Later in the frame, Shai Erdrich reached on an error, allowing Liz Garcia to score. After Mount Marty got one run back in the sixth, Polly's RBI groundout ended the scoring in the top of the seventh.

Schumacher finished 4-for-4 while Polly and Maria Provenzano each had two hits.

After pounding out nine hits to beat the Lancers Saturday, the Bees got just two hits in Sunday's 2-1 win. St. Ambrose was held without a hit through six innings. Finally, the Bees broke through in the top of the seventh. Provenzano beat out a bunt for the first SAU hit and Paige Kirkman followed with a triple into the right-field corner. Stiewe's groundball brought in Kirkman for a 2-0 lead.

That insurance run proved important as Mount Marty struck back with a run and had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh before Krull escaped the jam. Krull earned the win with two innings of relief. Emilee Erickson started and tossed five scoreless frames with seven strikeouts.

Even with just the two hits, St. Ambrose had its opportunities. The Bees had a runner on third with no outs in the first, the bases loaded with one out in the second, and a runner on third with one out in the third, and came up empty each time.

SAU managed just a single run in each of its two losses. Kayla Stenger's RBI single to center in the bottom of the first answered a pair of Aquinas runs in the top of the inning. Aquinas added a two-run home run in the fourth in the 4-1 win.

Stenger finished with two of the Bees' three hits with Erdrich recording the other. Provenzano was tagged with the loss. Kayla Roemer and Erickson combined to throw the final five innings in relief.

Kirkman, Stiewe and Reagan Engberg had the three SAU hits in the 2-1 loss to Mount Mercy. Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Engberg scored on an error to tie the game. But a half inning later, the Mustangs scored what proved to be the winning run. Ralfs went the distance but took the loss despite striking out seven while allowing just a pair of runs.

SAU, now 7-5, is scheduled to host William Penn outdoors at St. Vincent's on Wednesday, Mar. 8.
