St. Ambrose settles for split with Clarke

St. Ambrose improved to 5-3 on the year by splitting a doubleheader with Clarke in the Ambrose Dome Sunday afternoon. The Bees took the opener 9-2 before the Pride pulled away late to claim the second game 10-2 in six innings.

In the first game, SAU pounded out 12 hits, two each coming off the bats of Shai Erdrich, Alyssa Schumacher and Erica Ralfs.

The Bees struck early, plating a pair of runs in the opening inning. Erdrich led off with a walk and promptly stole second and third. Schmacher ripped a ground-rule double to get St. Ambrose on the board. One out later, Allison Polly lifted a fly ball to center to plate Schumacher.

SAU broke things open in the third. Paige Kirkman, Eryn Cornwell, Brooke Baker and Reagan Engberg had RBIs as part of a five-run outburst that pushed the lead to 7-0. Schumacher drove in runs with a single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth to account for the final two Bee runs.

Maria Provenzano also had a hit in the win.

Ralfs earned the victory after striking out eight over five innings. She allowed just two runs. Kayla Roemer threw two scoreless innings in relief.

The Bees also took an early lead in the second game. After Engberg reached on a one-out error, Kirkman and Polly followed with singles to put St. Ambrose in front. After Clarke scored twice in the second inning, SAU tied the game in the third. Engberg led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came around to score on an error by the catcher.

But after collecting four hits over the first three innings, the Bees managed just two more over the final three frames. The Pride went in front for good with a six-run fifth inning before tacking on two more in the sixth.

Erdrich, Engberg, Mackenzie Stiewe and Katie Brewer had hits in the loss.

Emilee Erickson was charged with the loss. She threw five innings before Annebelle Krull tossed the final inning.

St. Ambrose will host another multi-team event in the Ambrose Dome next weekend.
