SAU defeats Culver, Waldorf in Ambrose Dome

St. Ambrose showed off its aggressive side in sweeping two games in the Ambrose Dome Saturday. The Bees defeated Culver-Stockton 10-5 before beating Waldorf 8-0 in five innings.

SAU stole 13 bases over the two games and forced the opponents into several errors.

Eight of those steals came in the win over Culver-Stockton. The Bees showed off their speed right away in the bottom of the first after the Wildcats had grabbed a 1-0 lead. Shai Erdrich drew a lead-off walk. She immediately stole second and when the catcher's throw sailed into center, she took third. Erdrich then stole home to knot the score at 1-1.

SAU took advantage of seven CSC errors over the first two innings and led 5-2 on Maria Provenzano's RBI bunt single.

Culver came back with a four-run third inning to tie the game at 5-5. But in the bottom of the frame, Erica Ralfs reached on an error, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and came around to score on Allison Polly's two-out single.

Erdrich and Provenzano had RBI hits as part of a three-run fifth inning that extended the lead to 9-5. Kayla Stenger lifted a fly ball to right that scored Alyssa Schumacher, who tripled leading off the inning, to push across the final run in the bottom of the sixth.

Provenzano finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Schumacher and Polly each had two hits. Erdrich, Polly and Reagan Engberg each stole two bases, and Provenzano and Ralfs swiped one apiece.

Emilee Erickson picked up the win in relief of Ralfs. Erickson allowed two hits over four scoreless innings. She struck out four. Ralfs worked the first three innings.

Playing as the visiting team against Waldorf, St. Ambrose jumped to a quick lead in the top of the first. It started in a similar fashion as the first game. Erdrich was hit by a pitch, immediately stole second and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Provenzano reached on an error that allowed Erdrich to score. Schumacher had an RBI single and later, Ralfs got caught in a rundown long enough to allow Paige Kirkman to score for a fast 3-0 lead.

Erdrich laid down a bunt single with two outs to score Engberg for a 4-0 advantage in the second. Provenzano cleared the bases with a bases-loaded double in the sixth and Erdrich drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the fifth to plate Ralfs with the final run.

Erdrich and Schumacher each finished with two of the Bees' seven hits. Erdrich (two), Engberg (two) and Polly accounted for the five stolen bases.

The offensive explosion overshadowed a strong pitching performance. Provenzano allowed just a single hit over four innings while striking out three. Annebelle Krull tossed a perfect fifth inning to close things out.

St. Ambrose, now 4-2 overall, will host Clarke in a doubleheader in the Ambrose Dome Sunday afternoon.
