Two walk-off losses end SAU's run at CCAC Tourney

St. Ambrose saw its season come to an end at the CCAC Tournament Sunday afternoon. But the Bees didn't go down without a fight. A pair of fights, in fact.

SAU, seeded seventh, opened the double-elimination tournament by finishing up its suspended game from Thursday, an eventual 4-2 win over No. 2 seed Olivet Nazarene. The Bees were forced to turn around and play two more games, and dropped them both in walk-off fashion - a 4-3 loss to St. Francis (Ill.), the tournament's third seed and a 4-3 loss to Cardinal Stritch in an elimination game.

In the loss to the Saints, the Bees had to battle back after surrendering three runs in the first inning. And battle back, they did.

Kayla Stenger's double in the third brought in Olivia McClintock to get St. Ambrose on the board. Then in the fifth, Stenger drove in McClintock again, this time on an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2. Alyssa Schumacher followed with an RBI that plated Shai Erdrich to tie the game at 3-3.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. Erica Ralfs, who settled in after the three-run first inning, issued a lead-off walk before giving way to Alyia Oliver. The base runner advanced to second on an error and was sacrificed to third. A batter later, a single to right scored the game winner.

Ralfs took the loss. Erdrich, Maria Provenzano and Brittany Rabe joined Stenger with a hit in the loss.

With their backs against the wall, the Bees turned to Oliver to face Cardinal Stritch. And Oliver allowed just a single run over her first six innings. SAU got that run back in the top of the fourth when Erdrich's infield single drove in Kaylee King.

After having a potential go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the fifth, St. Ambrose broke through in the seventh. As she has all season, McClintock got things started, reaching on an error and then stealing second. She moved to third on a groundout, and with two outs, Schumacher laced a double to center to break the tie. Aleah Wight followed with a single to score Schumacher for a 3-1 lead.

Three outs away from surviving another day, the Bees were unable to close things out. The Wolves pushed across a pair of runs to force extra innings. And after SAU stranded a runner on third in the top of the eighth, CSU capitalized, using a two-out hit to bring in the winning run.

Oliver went the distance, working 7 2/3 innings in the finale. Provenzano collected two hits.

St. Ambrose finished the year with a 27-17 record.
