Ralfs records 100th strikeout as Bees defeat Tigers

Erica Ralfs closed out Sunday what she started Thursday. And made a little history while she was at it.

Ralfs re-entered and got the final three outs of the Bees' 4-2 win over Olivet Nazarene in a first-round game of the CCAC Tournament, a game that was suspended for three days due to rain. The victory will push St. Ambrose into a 2 p.m. game Sunday against St. Francis (Ill.) in the double-elimination tournament in Crown Point, Ind.

Ralfs went the first 5 2/3 innings Thursday before Alyia Oliver got the final out of the sixth inning. With the Bees leading 4-2 in the top of the seventh, play was suspended.

When the game was finally restarted Sunday, Ralfs re-entered and retired No. 2-seed Olivet Nazarene in order, striking out the first and third hitters she faced.

The final out of the contest was Ralfs' 100th strikeout of the season. She is just the sixth Bee to hit the milestone and the first since Kathryn Brown struck out 149 over 192 1/3 innings during the 2014 campaign. Ralfs has thrown 111 innings this season. She now has 162 strikeouts in her St. Ambrose career, putting her 10th on the program's all-time list.

The eight-hit, two-run performance was also the 15th win of the year from Ralfs, who is 15-6 this spring.

It was a much-needed performance for the Bees, who stumbled down the stretch, winning just one of their final eight games in the regular season. But Ralfs and some clutch hitting got SAU off to a great start in the postseason.

The Bees took advantage of a Tiger error allowing Aleah Wight to reach to start the second inning. She stole second and advanced to third on Maria Provenzano's sacrifice bunt. One out later, Sophia Delgado drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Kaitlyn Sandora and Olivia McClintock came through with back-to-back RBI singles to give SAU a 2-0 lead.

Kayla Stenger gave St. Ambrose some breathing room after Olivet pulled to within a run with a solo home run in the top of the fifth. Sandora upped the lead to 4-1 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly that plated Cassie Sprout, who was pinch running for Brittany Rabe who was hit by a pitch to start the frame.

The Tigers got one run back in the bottom of the sixth and threatened for more before Ralfs and Oliver combined to strand two runners. A re-energized Ralfs then closed things up Sunday.

McClintock was 2-for-3 in the win. Provenzano and Alyssa Schumacher each also had a hit.

St. Ambrose will face St. Francis at 2 p.m. A win would keep the Bees unbeaten and give them a 10 a.m. game Monday. A loss to the Saints would force the Bees into an elimination game at 4 p.m. Sunday.
