Fighting Bees fall in extra innings on Senior Day

Fighting Bees fall in extra innings on Senior Day

Between games of its home doubleheader against Indiana South Bend Sunday afternoon, St. Ambrose recognized its two seniors - Olivia McClintock and Aleah Wight.

Unfortunately, the Bees weren't able to send them out with a victory in their home finale as the Titans rallied for a 6-5 win in eight innings in the nightcap. IU South Bend took the opener 10-6.

Behind RBI hits from Kayla Stenger and Wight, St. Ambrose grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game. Wight added an RBI in the third and Alyssa Schumacher drove in a run in the fourth that extended the lead to 4-1. After the Titans got a run back, Schumacher added an insurance run in the sixth with a single that brought in Shai Erdrich for a 5-2 lead.

But the Bees weren't able to hold on. South Bend (21-23, 12-10 CCAC) took advantage of two walks and an error to push across three runs on just one hit to force extra innings. The Titans took their first lead of the game at 6-5 in the top of the eighth.

St. Ambrose had a chance in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Wight drew a walk and Kaitlyn Sandora was hit by a pitch. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position, but Grace Schmitz flew out to center to end the game.

In her final home game, Wight finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Schumacher and Cassie Sprout each had two hits. McClintock, Erdrich and Kylee Sweenie also had hits.

Alyia Oliver took the loss in relief of Maria Provenzano. Provenzano allowed just five hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings before Oliver worked the final 2 1/3 frames.

St. Ambrose surrendered runs in six of the seven innings in dropping the opener 10-6. South Bend scored two runs in each of the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. SAU had just two runs through six innings, those coming on McClintock scrambling home on a throwing error in the first and Schumacher singling in Erdrich in the third.

Finally in the seventh, the Bee offense made a game of it. Erdrich had a run-scoring single and Stenger drew a bases-loaded walk. Wight brought in two with a double to trim the final margin to four runs.

McClintock, Wight and Stenger each had two hits. Bella Welton also singled.

Erica Ralfs was charged with the loss after allowing four earned runs over 3 2/3 innings.

SAU will now take a 26-15 record into the CCAC Tournament that begins Thursday in Crown Point, Ind.
