Lakers stun Fighting Bees twice in final at bat

St. Ambrose built leads in both games of a doubleheader at Roosevelt Saturday only to see them both slip away. The Lakers rallied for 12-11 and 7-6 wins in Chicago. The first game went eight innings.

In the first game, SAU built leads of 5-0, 7-1 and 11-2 but couldn't hold on. Roosevelt scored six runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh to force extra innings. After the Bees stranded two runners in the top of the eighth, the Lakers got the walk-off win.

St. Ambrose pounded out 13 hits but could not overcome five errors and a 19-hit attack from Roosevelt.

Aleah Wight went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Olivia McClintockAlyssa Schumacher and Kaitlyn Sandora also each had two hits. Schumacher and Maria Provenzano each drove in a pair while McClintock and Shai Erdrich each scored twice and knocked in one. Olivia Wells and Kayla Stenger also had RBIs.

Erica Ralfs was charged with the loss.

The Bees experienced heartbreak again in the second game. Trailing 4-0, SAU exploded for six runs in the sixth inning. Cassie Sprout, Wells, Brittany Rabe, Wight and Kylee Sweenie each had RBIs that gave St. Ambrose a 6-4 lead.

It didn't last. Roosevelt scored three times in the bottom of the frame, including an unearned run which broke a 6-6 tie on another SAU error. Schumacher was hit by a pitch with two outs in the seventh but the Bee threat ended there.

Erdrich finished with two of the Bees' seven hits in the nightcap.

Provenzano took with the loss.

St. Ambrose, now 25-10 overall and 9-7 in the CCAC, has a quick turnaround as the Bees will host Indiana South Bend Sunday at 1 p.m.
