St. Ambrose drops doubleheader at St. Francis

Playing its fourth doubleheader in as many days, St. Ambrose dropped a doubleheader at St. Francis (Ill.) by scores of 2-0 and 7-2 Tuesday night in Joliet, Ill.

An SAU error led to two unearned runs that put the Bees in a 2-0 hole in the second inning of the second game.

The deficit was four runs before St. Ambrose got on the board for the only time of the night in the sixth inning. Kayla Stenger led off with a walk and pinch runner Bella Welton advanced to third on Aleah Wight's double. Alyssa Schumacher lifted a sacrifice fly to center and Grace Schmitz had an RBI groundout to get the Bees within 4-2.

But St. Francis (16-8, 6-2 CCAC) answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. St. Ambrose threatened again in the seventh, putting two on base, but came up empty.

Shai Erdrich collected two of the Bees' five hits. Maria Provenzano was charged with the loss despite allowing only one earned run over four innings.

The Bees were completely shut down in the opener. The team managed just two hits, a Schumacher one-out double in the second and a Kaitlyn Sandora one-out single in the third. SAU's biggest threat actually came in the fourth without the benefit of a hit as Wight and Olivia Wells each walked but Brittany Rabe popped up to end the threat. The Bees put just one runner on base over the final three innings.

Erica Ralfs pitched well but took the loss after allowing a single run in both the first and second innings. She surrendered seven hits over five innings. Alyia Oliver pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.

St. Ambrose (23-8, 7-5 CCAC) will get some time off but things won't get any easier as the Bees are next scheduled to host No. 24 Saint Xavier on Apr. 20.
