SAU drops doubleheader to Olivet Nazarene

The second-longest winning streak in program history and an early share of first place in the CCAC both slipped away as St. Ambrose dropped a doubleheader to Olivet Nazarene Saturday afternoon at the St. Vincent Athletic Complex.

The Tigers won the opener 10-0 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 3-1 win in the second game.

The Bees were taken out of the first game early after surrending four runs in the top of the first. Olivet Nazarene (15-7-1, 5-0 CCAC) pushed across two runs in each of the second, third and fifth innings to snap SAU's 15-game winning streak.

St. Ambrose managed only four hits and staged its biggest threat in the fourth inning. Shai Erdrich and Kayla Stenger started the frame with back-to-back singles, but they were stranded as the Bees came up empty. Brittany Rabe and Kaitlyn Sandora also had singles in the opener.

Erica Ralfs took the loss. Maria Provenzano pitched three innings in relief.

SAU collected nine hits in a very competitive Game 2, but the Bees struggled to get timely hits, leaving seven runners on base.

The Bees' lone run came in the third. Olivia McClintock reached on a one-out single and stole second. One out later, Stenger singled to plate McClintock for a 1-1 tie.

ONU answered the next half-inning with a run to take a 2-1 lead. SAU appeared poised to strike back in the fifth as Sophia Delgado and McClintock singled to start the inning, but the next three Bees were retired to end the frame. The Tigers pushed across an insurance run in the top of the seventh to end the scoring.

Stenger joined McClintock with a two-hit game. Rabe, Sandora, Cassie Sprout and Alyssa Schumacher also had hits in the nightcap.

Alyia Oliver went the distance allowing nine hits and three runs in taking the loss. She struck out three.

St. Ambrose returns to action Sunday at home against Judson. The CCAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
