Two big wins open conference action

After averaging better than 10 runs over their last four Spring Break games in Florida, a return north didn't cool the Bee bats.

St. Ambrose exploded for 27 more hits and 24 runs in opening CCAC play by sweeping Trinity International 14-1 and 10-0 Saturday afternoon in the Ambrose Dome. Each game lasted just five innings.

SAU scored at least one run in seven of its eight offensive innings in the doubleheader, and pushed across multiple runs in six different frames.

Leading the way, at the top of the order, was Olivia McClintock, who finished 5-of-7 with five stolen bases and four runs scored. She set the tone early, leading off each game with a base hit and stolen base.

In the opening game, McClintock came around to score on a Kayla Stenger sacrifice fly. Aleah Wight doubled in Olivia Wells and Wight later stole home, all part of a three-run first.

The Bees added eight runs in the second on seven hits, five of those for extra bases. Stenger and Alyssa Schumacher each had run-scoring triples and Wight, Brittany Rabe and Sophia Delgado each had an RBI double in the inning that pushed the lead to 11-0.

Schumacher doubled in another run in the third before Kaylee King ended the St. Ambrose scoring with a two-run triple.

The offensive fireworks overshadowed a strong performance from Erica Ralfs in the circle. The junior pitcher tossed four scoreless, no-hit innings and struck out seven in improving to 9-0 this season. Corinn Vega surrendered the first Trojan hit in the fifth inning before closing out the win.

Wight and Schumacher joined McClintock with a three-hit game.

In Game 2, McClintock, Cassie Sprout and Allison Polly each had multiple hits. Schumacher, Polly and Kaitlyn Sandora each drove in a pair, and McClintock, Sprout, Wight, Delgado and Polly each scored twice. Kylee Sweenie also had an RBI.

The Bees jumped to a 2-0 lead after one before breaking things open with a five-run second. They tacked on two more in the third before ending the scoring with a final run in the fourth.

Alyia Oliver got the win, improving to 5-2, by throwing a five-hit complete game shutout.

St. Ambrose, now 16-3 overall and 2-0 in the CCAC, is scheduled to play its final non-conference games next Tuesday when the Bees host Wisconsin-Platteville in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
